Job Description

As the Head Roaster, you will be responsible for the collaborative management of the roasting department. This includes providing leadership and management for all aspects of roasting and fulfillment of coffee. You will play a key role in the mission of the company through the development of roast profiles, executing high standards of roast consistency and exhibiting excellence in flavor development. You will also be integral in QC and sourcing cuppings, tracking coffee inventory, and upkeep of roasting equipment. This position will report to the Director of Coffee.


  • Roasting – Oversee daily roasting activities; ensure quality and consistency of roast profiles on two roasting machines – a 25 lb. San Franciscan and a 75 lb. Loring; lead high-volume roasting environment with quality standards and teamwork at the forefront
  • Sourcing – Sample roast and evaluate via SCA cupping standards and Ceremony brewing standards; provide input to inform green purchasing decisions
  • Quality Control – Lead production cuppings; document results and make necessary adjustments to ensure roast quality; monitor green coffee for stability and quality; maintain blend standards
  • Maintenance – Conduct routine cleanings and maintenance of roasting and production equipment; establish a thorough working knowledge of all systems; maintain a tidy work area
  • Leadership – Maintain a high standard of professionalism and communication with the production team and interdepartmentally; contribute constructively to company-wide and departmental meetings, provide positive support for the Production Roaster and Warehouse team
  • Inventory – Maintain logs of green coffee supply and blend percentages
  • Culture – Contribute to a coffee-forward culture by engaging co-workers and guests with kindness, knowledge, and enthusiasm


  • HS Graduate + Bachelor’s Degree or strong learner
  • 3+ years production roasting experience; an ability to create roast profiles
  • Advanced sensory evaluation and cupping/SCA scoresheet skills – Q-Graders a plus
  • Sincere interest and dedication toward ongoing skill development
  • Good organizational skills, problem solving ability, and intuitive resourcefulness
  • Strong initiative, leadership skills, and ability to self-manage, while remaining open to constructive feedback
  • Strong competencies with Cropster and MS Office applications including Excel and Word
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, ~8 hours each work day
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more and perform repetitive, range-of-motion activities
