In order to keep creating and drinking the best coffee in the world, we work to ensure our partners and buying decisions support a viable future for the specialty coffee industry. Researchers have found that the coffee sector is about 20 to 30 years behind other agricultural industries in sustainability research and conservation efforts. Climate Project is a single origin medium roast coffee that donates 10% of proceeds to partners and projects at origin that help producers adapt to changing climate.
This year we are partnering with our importing and exporting partner, Caravela Coffee. They are a Latin America based company that strives to cultivate care across the coffee value chain. They act to build connections, nurture long-term relationships, and enhance prosperity for coffee producers. The 5 core values of Caravela's business model- sustainability, education, traceability, long-term relationships, and transparency- enable their 200+ employees to positively impact the 7 coffee-producing countries they work in.
Proceeds for this coffee are going towards a tree-planting initiative in the Los Monjes community of Colombia. With our initial investment, Caravela will plant 390 trees across 10 coffee farms in the region. After careful assessment of the land and the local biome, they will select tree species for each farm, favoring bio-diverse hardwood and fruit trees. Caravela will provide continued education and training to the local community on the implementation and maintenance of the project.
By sponsoring a diversity of green assets for smallholder farms, we can improve soil quality and water retention, restore degraded areas, provide shade for coffee crops, promote biodiversity, and sequester carbon all while aiding the producers' income and promoting good farming habits. Through this initiative, we aim to offset the CO2 emissions of the green coffee we source from Caravela each year.
