Fazenda Rio Brihlante is run by one of the migrant families who left the south of Brazil looking for new opportunity. In the 80s, the founder Inácio Urban, purchased 20 hectares of land and began to plant coffee with the plan to learn as he went. Over the last 40 years, he continued purchasing more land, eventually growing the farm to its impressive current size of 1,600 hectares. The large farm is divided into 45 different sections that each present their own unique micro-climate and characteristics. The sections are broken up by forested areas of native trees and plants. 20% of the farm is covered in these forest reserves, preserving the natural biodiversity of the land.
Rio Brihlante sits in the micro-region of Pântano in Southeastern Brazil. The region is known for its well-defined seasons, consistent seasonal rains, and overall favorable climate for coffee production. Approximately 80% of the production on this farm is naturally processed. This lot was separated out by its varietal- Icatu. This is a newer variety in Brazil. It's a yellow variety that yields great quality while being resistant to leaf rust, blight, droughts, and heavy rain.
We find this coffee approachable and interesting- the perfect morning brew. Dial into panela, cherry, and peanut butter by starting with a 1:16 brew ratio, filtered water at 204-206℉, a medium-coarse grind, and a 3.5-4 minute brew cycle.
